“Pay them enough to take money off the table” (also remember that “taking money off the table” means something entirely different to a 26 year-old bachelor and a 32 year-old father of two, and that your pay increase method needs to account for that, or it ain’t gonna work).

The Wonkavator can go sideways and slantways and longways and backways and squareways and front ways and any other ways that you can think of.

This sucker just goes up.  And up.  And up.  With the exception of developing auxons, some cheap and energy efficient method of getting materials out of orbit (and into it) is the most important advancement in getting access to off-planet resources… and let me tell you, off-planet resources are the next Gold Rush, my friends.

Space elevators have been a staple of science fiction for years.  Looks like the Wikipedia article needs work; I remember more than a few articles about space elevators in Popular Mechanics.  Maybe I should start contributing…
