Day Six: Favourite Song

Opus 67.

This, actually, is illustrative of one of my major irks about the classical genre of music.  My copy is the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Walter Weller conducting.  The pacing is a bit off.  The version I heard as a child was Josef Krips conducting the London Symphony Orchestra according to the pater familias, which he calls “Not particularly good even for the time.”

There are several recordings I can find on YouTube.  This one is practically tripping over itself to get done as quickly as possible, which is in my limited experience a very common problem in interpretations of the opening movement…

Dad reports his favorite is the recording of  Herbert von Karajan’s conducting in 1968, which is the first of these two different Karajans on YouTube:

I’m somewhat partial to the second on first listening.  Of course, youtubifications of recordings have atrocious sound quality, for the most part.

Perhaps some day I shall engage in a true Volkerwanderung, a walkabout of the audiophile, so to speak, in search of the One True Expression of this work, to find that recording which communicates most effectively with my own inner beast.  It is almost certainly a Quixotic search of the first order.

  1. I hope you find it!

When I put up the Magic Flute overture, I had gone through at least six different you tube versions before I found the one that came closest to the way I like it. 🙂
