The Anthony Pellicano case has brought to light again a number of things that security wonks already knew, but still qualify as news because apparently nobody else has caught on yet.

The article in the NY Times does a pretty good job of describing the three main ones (login required): one, social engineering is really effective at the phone company (read Mitnick’s books for more examples); two, when used properly, the current cryptographic technologies are sufficient to block anyone from breaking them; and three, the current cryptographic technologies are hardly ever used properly.
